1) Use context before questions

Native speakers often add quick context before asking a question. It sounds warmer and less abrupt.

Examples

Looks like it's been a busy week. How are you holding up?

It sounds personal and conversational, not like an interview.

I just saw your message about work. How did the meeting go?

Mentioning shared context makes your question relevant right away.

2) Keep your opener short

A strong opener is usually one short sentence plus one easy question.

  • Great weather today. Did you get outside at all?
  • I finally finished that task. What are you working on now?

Practice prompts

  • Start a video call with a coworker in one sentence, then ask one follow-up question.
  • Write three openers for morning, afternoon, and evening conversations.
